Today (Wednesday, August 12), family, friends and those closest to Ann Widdecombe will gather at Buckfast Abbey to commend her soul to God during a private Requiem Mass.
A lifelong and deeply committed Roman Catholic, Ann’s faith was central to her life. It is therefore fitting that her final farewell will take place within the peaceful surroundings of Buckfast Abbey, where she worshipped regularly. The service will be attended by family and invited guests only, reflecting both the solemnity of the occasion and the wishes of those closest to her.
Buckfast Abbey has confirmed there will be no public access to the Abbey Church during the funeral and has asked members of the media not to attend. An Order of Service will be published online today, with the homily from the Abbot to be released later.
For many, today is not simply the funeral of a former MP, broadcaster and author, but a moment to remember a woman of unwavering conviction whose Christian faith guided her throughout her public life. As prayers are offered for the repose of her soul, many across the country will quietly join in giving thanks for her life and service.
Requiescat in pace, Ann Widdecombe. May perpetual light shine upon her.
