There has been an outpouring of tributes following the death of former Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council, Alderman Peter Smith, who passed away on Monday.
Pete began his working life as a blacksmith in Devonport Dockyard at just 15 before becoming a full-time GMB representative. He later served Plymouth as a city councillor for Honicknowle and Deputy Leader of Plymouth City Council until his retirement in 2021.
A lifelong Plymouth Argyle supporter, Pete was passionate about sport and helped drive projects including the Manadon Sports Hub, the events field at Central Park and Plymouth’s first Ports Strategy.
I had the pleasure of meeting Pete on a number of occasions over the years while covering events around the city. He was always friendly, approachable and generous with his time. Whatever was happening, he always had a smile and was happy to stop for a chat. He was simply a genuinely nice man.
Pete’s funeral will take place at The Park Crematorium at 1pm on Wednesday 22 July.
Our thoughts are with Pete’s family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched. Rest in peace, Pete.
