Plymouth Conservative leader Councillor Chris Wood has described the proposed consultation on whether Plymouth should join the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority as a “farce”.
Councillor Wood says the process fails to give Plymouth residents a basic choice over whether they want the city to become part of the authority.
The consultation is due to be considered by Plymouth City Council’s Full Council on Monday.
Councillor Wood said residents deserve a clear and straightforward say on what he describes as a major decision for the future of Plymouth.
He also questioned whether the public is being given a genuine say, pointing out that the council has previously ignored residents’ views on changing the election cycle. He said the current consultation does not even ask people whether they want Plymouth to join a new devolved authority, raising questions over how meaningful the public’s involvement really is.
