Plymouth’s newly appointed Reform UK deputy leader Chris Sharpe says he is pleased to see action taken on a local issue he raised with residents before being elected.

The Old Laira Road bollards, which had become covered in graffiti including red crosses, have now been replaced after complaints from local people about their appearance.

Mr Sharpe said the issue was part of his election campaign after residents told him they were becoming frustrated with the graffiti.

“The bollards at Old Laira Road were part of my campaign whilst being elected. Residents told me they were getting ‘cross’ with the graffiti, so I reported it and I’m pleased to see they have been replaced.”

He said he had been prepared to clean the bollards himself but was advised against it due to safety concerns and the risk of causing damage.

The work comes as Mr Sharpe takes on his new role as deputy leader of the Plymouth Reform UK group.

He described the appointment as “an absolute honour and privilege” and said it had motivated him to work even harder for residents.

Mr Sharpe said Reform UK’s rise in Plymouth had happened quickly, with the party now the official opposition on Plymouth City Council.

“Three years ago we were unheard of in the city and now we’re the official opposition of the council. It’s crazy how quick it’s all happened but people want change.”

He added that he hopes to bring his hardworking, proactive and organised approach to the new position.
