The Cry of "HERALD!" That Once Echoed Around Plymouth
For generations, the cry of "HERALD!" was part of everyday life in Plymouth as newspaper vendors lined the city centre, selling the latest local news to shoppers and commuters.
This photograph was taken in January, 1997, by Plymouth Post photographer Wayne Perry, on the retirement day of one of the city's best-known Herald sellers. Smartly dressed in a shirt, tie and flat cap, and wearing a huge smile, he was given a fitting send-off as his face appeared through the front page of the very newspaper he had spent years selling.
It's a lovely snapshot of a tradition that was once a familiar part of city life but is now rarely seen.
When was the last time you remember seeing a newspaper vendor calling out the headlines in the city centre?
