A new chapter is about to begin for one of Plymouth’s most historic and recognisable buildings, with work due to start on the long-awaited regeneration of the Athenaeum Theatre.
The venue opened its doors to the public for one final time before construction begins, giving visitors a rare chance to look around the theatre as it stands today and reflect on the memories created there over the years.
The ambitious project is designed to breathe new life into the Grade II* listed building, carefully blending its rich heritage with modern facilities that will help secure its future as a vibrant cultural destination.
When complete, the regenerated Athenaeum is expected to offer a more flexible and accessible space capable of hosting everything from theatre productions and comedy to live music, conferences and community events. Improved hospitality areas and upgraded public spaces also form part of the wider vision for the venue.

Among the ideas that have been discussed is the possibility of installing retractable seating in the main auditorium. While plans are subject to the final design, such a feature would allow the space to be quickly reconfigured for standing concerts and larger live music events, creating a versatile venue similar in concept to the flexibility offered at Plymouth Pavilions.
For generations, the Athenaeum has been at the heart of Plymouth’s cultural life, welcoming audiences through its doors for performances, lectures, celebrations and community gatherings. The regeneration aims to ensure the building continues to play that role for decades to come while attracting new audiences and a wider variety of events.
As the doors close and work begins, the familiar theatre enters a period of transformation. When it reopens, the Athenaeum is expected to emerge as a modern entertainment and events venue that celebrates its remarkable history while embracing the future.
For many who visited during the farewell open day, it was a chance to say goodbye to the Athenaeum as they have always known it, and to look forward to what promises to be an exciting new beginning.
