Plymouth’s Constantin Ursu Triumphs to Claim British, Commonwealth and European Welterweight Titles
Plymouth’s Constantin Ursu produced a commanding twelve-round performance to defeat Owen Cooper and claim the British, Commonwealth and European welterweight titles. Plymouth Post boxing correspondent Sheridan Davey said Ursu “started fast, letting his left hand go,” setting the tone for the contest from the opening round.
As the fight developed, Davey wrote that Ursu began to “outclass Cooper with his footwork, speed, power and accuracy,” while acknowledging Cooper’s quality and resilience, particularly during strong spells in the fourth, ninth and tenth rounds. The bout intensified into what Davey described as a “toe-to-toe war” in the eighth, with Ursu edging key moments late in the round, including a powerful combination that “nearly took [Cooper’s] head off.”
In the later rounds, Ursu increased his work rate and control, and in the twelfth he “really turned it on, boxing Cooper’s head off,” sealing a decisive victory. Davey concluded it was “a masterful performance against a very, very good opponent,” adding that Ursu had “shown the world there’s something special in Plymouth.”
