Plymouth Enterprise Standing just a few feet from the water’s edge on Hoe Road, West Hoe, Rock Cottage is one of Plymouth’s most distinctive historic homes. Overlooking Plymouth Sound, the property has watched the city’s famous waterfront evolve for around 200 years, from the age of sail through to the modern day.

Its position reflects the area’s long maritime history. For generations, this stretch of coastline has been tied to Plymouth’s working waterfront. While the cottage’s exact early use has never been fully documented, it is believed to have had strong links to the working life of the harbour.

Inside, the cottage combines period charm with modern comfort. Original features sit alongside carefully restored interiors, while almost every room enjoys uninterrupted views across the water, constantly changing with the tides, weather and passing boats.

One of the property’s most remarkable features lies outside, where a flight of historic stone steps descends directly into Plymouth Sound. Few homes can claim such an intimate connection with the sea, making Rock Cottage a truly unique place to experience the city’s maritime setting.

The recent restoration has been carried out with great respect for the building’s heritage. Holiday Lets Plymouth, who now run the cottage as holiday accommodation, hope to reinstate the distinctive castle-style battlements that once crowned the roofline, restoring an important architectural feature that helped define the cottage’s historic appearance.

Today, Rock Cottage stands as a reminder of Plymouth’s rich seafaring past. It demonstrates how historic buildings can be carefully preserved, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique waterfront home while helping to safeguard an important piece of the city’s heritage for future generations.
