Highbury Trust celebrates 70 years of supporting people in Plymouth

5 August 2026

There was plenty to celebrate at the Highbury Trust as the Plymouth charity marked its 70th anniversary with a coffee morning at its Outland Road home.

Residents, service users, families, staff and supporters came together for tea, coffee and cakes, while a raffle, prizes and a visit from a pair of friendly alpacas helped make the occasion one to remember. The Deputy Lord Mayor also attended, spending time chatting with residents and joining in the festivities.

Founded in 1956, the Highbury Trust has spent seven decades providing care, support and opportunities for people with learning disabilities, helping them live fulfilling, independent lives while remaining active members of the local community.

Among those celebrating was Michael Arnold, who has been part of the Highbury Trust community since the 1970s.

“I love it here,” he said. “and all the people I’m happy.”

Michael was joined by his sister, Carol Parnell, whose family has a long standing connection with the Trust their father originally held the deeds to the Highbury building. Carol said it was wonderful to celebrate the milestone alongside her brother and everyone at Highbury.

Matt, another service user enjoying the event, was equally enthusiastic. “It’s a great place to be,” he said. “I love it here.”

The 70th anniversary was a chance to look back on the Highbury Trust’s history, and to recognise the friendships, support and sense of community that continue to make it such an important part of Plymouth. With smiles all round, plenty of cake and even alpacas joining the party, it was a fitting way to celebrate seven decades of changing lives.
