Seven people were rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out at a four-storey block of flats in Greenbank during the early hours of this morning.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service sent eight fire appliances to Hospital Road, where flames were coming from a first-floor flat.
Two people were rescued using a ladder, while five others were brought to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. Thirty elderly residents were evacuated from the building and everyone was accounted for.
The flat where the fire started was destroyed, while a communal area on the first floor suffered fire and significant smoke damage. Two other communal areas were also affected by smoke.
South Western Ambulance Service confirmed one person was taken by ambulance to Derriford Hospital.
Firefighters used water jets to tackle the blaze, with 16 breathing apparatus wearers involved in the operation.
A fire investigation is continuing this morning.
