Clocks go back this weekend as British Summer Time comes to an end

24 October 2026

Don’t forget to turn your clocks back this weekend as British Summer Time comes to an end, giving everyone an extra hour in bed on Sunday Morning.

At 2am on Sunday, 25 October, the clocks will go back one hour to 1am as the UK returns to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Most smartphones, computers and other digital devices will change automatically, but traditional clocks and watches will need adjusting by hand.

The change means lighter mornings for a while, although the evenings will get darker earlier as winter approaches.

To mark the occasion, here is a photograph from the Plymouth Post archives showing Monty Humphreys, the Plymouth clock and watchmaker, at work in the old college in Paradise Road. It’s a reminder of the days when keeping time was a skilled craft, long before smartphones and digital clocks took care of it for us.

British Summer Time returns on Sunday, 28 March 2027, when the clocks go forward again.
