Residents were rescued from a Plymouth block of flats during the night after a fire at Greenbank Court in Greenbank Road.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were seen helping people from the building, including a man in his pyjamas who was brought outside by crews while wearing breathing equipment.
A large number of firefighters attended the incident, while police closed Greenbank Road at both ends and restricted access to surrounding roads.
Residents, many still in dressing gowns, gathered outside as emergency crews dealt with the fire. Firefighters and ambulance crews were seen checking residents as a precaution.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
