Plymouth’s history is rich, varied and full of remarkable stories, but few people have done as much to explore one of its most dramatic periods as local historian and author Philip Photiou.
For many years, Philip has devoted himself to researching the English Civil War, particularly Plymouth’s central role during one of the most turbulent chapters in British history. Through detailed research and a genuine passion for local heritage, he has helped shine a light on a period that deserves far greater recognition.
The English Civil War transformed Plymouth. As a Parliamentarian stronghold, the town endured years of siege while surrounded by Royalist forces. Food became scarce, lives were turned upside down, and ordinary people found themselves caught in the middle of a conflict that would shape the future of the nation. It is these stories of resilience, courage and everyday life that feature so strongly in Philip’s work.
His research brings together historical records, contemporary accounts and local knowledge to help readers understand not just what happened, but why Plymouth’s stand during the Civil War was so important.
Alongside his historical writing, Philip has also written historical fiction, including The Wrath of Kings and The Lamb of God, the first two instalments of a planned Wars of the Roses trilogy, with the concluding novel still to come. Set during the reign of Edward IV in the fifteenth century, the books weave fictional characters into genuine historical events. While the stories themselves are works of fiction, the historical background, locations, battles and many of the real-life figures are grounded in careful research, giving readers an authentic sense of England during one of its most turbulent medieval conflicts.
This blend of accurate history and compelling storytelling offers a different way of understanding the past. Rather than simply reading about historical events, readers are immersed in the world of fifteenth century England through the eyes of believable characters living through extraordinary times.
Through his books, talks and continuing research, Philip Photiou has become one of Plymouth’s leading voices on the Civil War. His work continues to inspire readers to look beyond the familiar landmarks and discover the people, places and events that helped shape the city’s identity.
History is more than dates and battles. It is the story of real communities, real decisions and real sacrifices. Thanks to historians like Philip Photiou, Plymouth’s Civil War story continues to be discovered, appreciated and passed on to future generations.
