Green Party councillor Saahi Aroori to give away hundreds of free pea growing kits

22 October 2026

Hundreds of free pea shoot growing kits will be handed out to residents in Plymouth’s Drake ward this Saturday as part of a community project organised by Green Party councillor Saahi Aroori.

Cllr Aroori has spent the past few months working alongside local volunteers on Project Pea, using recycled, repurposed and donated materials to make growing food at home more accessible.

The giveaway will take place at Greenbank Community Centre on Saturday 24 October, between 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Each kit contains peas, organic compost and a container, providing everything needed to grow fresh pea shoots on a windowsill. Within a couple of weeks, residents could be harvesting their own shoots to use in salads, soups and sandwiches.

Cllr Aroori said Drake has some of the lowest access to green space in Plymouth and wanted to do something practical to address the issue.

The initiative also aims to promote healthy eating, mental wellbeing and sustainability, while encouraging conversations about where food comes from.

Several local community organisations involved in food and sustainability are also expected to attend Saturday’s event.
