Camborne 21 Plymouth Albion 32
Plymouth Albion continued their impressive start to the National 1 season with a 32 to 21 victory over Camborne at the Recreation Ground.
Several hundred Albion supporters were among a bumper crowd of 2,619 for Camborne’s first home fixture in the third tier.
Ryan Lamb’s side led 20 to 0 at half time before securing their second successive bonus point victory away from home.
Iwan Jenkins opened the scoring with an early penalty before Camborne’s Josh Matavesi was shown a yellow card for a late tackle.
Albion quickly took advantage, with captain Huw Taylor powering over from close range following a lineout.
Noah Fenton added a second try after Chris Preen opened up the Camborne defence, before Harry Wilkinson crossed from a catch and drive shortly before the interval.
Albion struck again six minutes into the second half. Frankie Dart, returning to competitive action following injury, was involved in a flowing move which ended with Fenton claiming his second try of the afternoon.
The score secured Albion’s try bonus point.
Camborne responded through Ben Priddey, with Oliver Roberts adding the conversion, but Albion continued to cause problems from the lineout.
Wilkinson crossed for his second try on the hour, taking his tally to five from Albion’s opening two league fixtures.
Sam Daly also crossed the line during the second half, but the score was ruled out for obstruction.
Camborne continued to battle and reduced the deficit through late tries from Jordan Nicholls and Sam Matavesi, both converted by Roberts.
Wilkinson, who played the full 80 minutes, was named Nuffield Health Man of the Match following another influential display in the Albion front row.
There was also a strong performance from Cameron Doak on his first start for the club.
The result leaves Albion with ten league points from a possible ten following two bonus point victories on the road. They began the campaign with a 61 to 17 win at Rosslyn Park.
Head coach Ryan Lamb said: “We’re delighted with the start to the season. To come away with maximum points from two games on the road, you can’t really ask for much more.”
Albion will now play their first home league fixture of the season when newly promoted Sheffield visit Brickfields on Saturday, September 19.
Kick off is at 3pm.
