Old Laira Road Cameras Caught 46K Drivers, Police Data Reveals

30 May 2026

Newly released Freedom of Information data from Devon & Cornwall Police has revealed the scale of speeding enforcement on Plymouth’s Old Laira Road — with more than 46,000 offences recorded since the camera system became operational.

According to figures provided by the force, a total of 46,886 speeding offences have been recorded on the route.

Based on the standard minimum £100 speeding penalty, the total number of recorded offences could equate to more than £4.6 million in potential fines and enforcement outcomes over the lifetime of the system, although some motorists may instead have attended speed awareness courses.

The latest figures show the route remains one of the busiest camera enforcement locations across Devon & Cornwall.

Between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, a total of 8,415 speeding offences were recorded on Old Laira Road averaging around 23 detections per day.

According to the FOI response, Old Laira Road ranked first across Devon & Cornwall during 2024 for Notices of Intended Prosecution, Fixed Penalty Notices, and Speed Awareness Courses issued.

In 2025, the route ranked third overall across the two counties using the same measures.

Devon & Cornwall Police released overall enforcement totals but declined to provide a breakdown showing which individual cameras recorded the highest number of detections.

The force cited exemptions under Section 31 (Law Enforcement) and Section 38 (Health and Safety) of the Freedom of Information Act, stating that releasing detailed operational information could undermine policing tactics and potentially affect road safety.

Old Laira Road has long been a talking point among Plymouth motorists, and the newly released figures provide one of the clearest official snapshots yet of the level of speeding enforcement taking place on the route.
